PREREQUISITES

1. Be a baptized member, in regular standing, of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. (p.13)

Baptismal Certificate or a letter from the church clerk/local pastor confirming membership.

2. Have a written recommendation from your local church board. (p.15)

Folder Evidence:

None required. This is included on your application form.

3. Be at least 16 years of age to start the Master Guide curriculum and minimum 18 years old at completion. (p.17)

Folder Evidence:

A letter from the Club Director confirming the applicants age.

4. Be an active staff member of an Adventurer or Pathfinder Club. (p.19)

Folder Evidence:

A Letter from the Club Director confirming club involvement or a copy of the current church officers list.

5. Complete a Basic Staff Training Course and be involved for a minimum of one year in one of the following ministries: (p.21)

a. Adventurer Ministries or b. Pathfinder Ministries

Folder Evidence:

Certificate of completion AND proof of completion of the Keeping The Church Family Safe (KCFS) training.

6. Have a current DBS Certificate

Folder Evidence:

Photocopy of the DBS Certificate.

SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Read or listen to the book Steps to Christ and submit a one page response focusing on the benefits of the reading (p.25)

Folder Evidence:

One A4 page typed submission using a font size 11 or 12.

2. Complete the devotional guide Encounter Series 1, Christ the Way, or complete another year long Bible reading plan that covers the four Gospels (p.27)

If following the Encounter Series 1 reading plan you are required to tick each day as you complete the reading and retain the copy of the plan in your folder as evidence. If you are following a different plan you will need to show evidence of your daily reading.

3. Read or listen to the book The Desire of Ages (p.33)

Folder Evidence:

Submit a book report containing this information and using this format

Title, Author, Publisher, ISBN No. and year published

Paragraph 1 - Summary about the book

Paragraph 2 – How the book has impacted you spiritually

Paragraph 3 – What will you do differently in your Pathfinder/Adventurer role now that you have read the book? 

4. Do one of the following:

a. Keep a devotional journal for a minimum of four weeks, summarizing what you learned in your devotional time and outlining how you are growing in your faith. (p.35)

b. Complete the Steps to Discipleship Personal Spirituality Curriculum. (p.37)

Folder Evidence:

a. A document/book covering a period of four weeks. Refer to the Devotional Journal template. Please note that this is your personal journal so we will not read it however we must see evidence that it has been completed.

b. Follow the Steps to Discipleship Personal Spirituality Curriculum and include the worksheet pages in your folder.

5. Be involved in one or more evangelistic or community based outreach programs (p.39)

Folder Evidence:

All relevant evidence to demonstrate your involvement in the program(s). This could include flyers, schedules, recordings, photos, minutes of meetings etc.

6. Prepare a one page point form (bullet point) summary on each of the 28 fundamental beliefs. (p.43)

Folder Evidence:

One typed A4 page using a font size 11 or 12 for each of the 28 fundamentals.

7. Develop and give a presentation on four of the following beliefs, making use of visual aids if possible. (p.51)

A - Creation; b - The Experience of Salvation; c - Growing in Christ; d - The Remnant and its Mission; e - Baptism; f - Spiritual Gifts and Ministries; g - The Gift of Prophecy; h - The Sabbath; I - Christ’s Ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary; j - The Second Coming of Christ

K - Death and Resurrection.

A printed copy of each of the four presentations.

8. Enhance your knowledge of church heritage by completing the following: (p.53)

a. Earn the Adventist Church Heritage Award,

b. Read a book about SDA youth ministry such as:

  • The Pathfinder Story by John Hancock or Bob Holbrook Or We are The Pathfinders Strong: The First Fifty Years by Willie Oliver with Patricia Humphrey OR Another book that is approved by your supervising Conference/Mission Youth Ministries Director

c. Reading a book about church heritage such as:

  • Anticipating the Advent by George Knight OR Tell It to the World by Mervyn Maxwell OR Light Bearers to the Remnant by Richard W. Schwarz and Floyd Greenleaf OR The Church Heritage Manual produced by the General Conference Youth Department OR Another book that is approved by your supervising Conference/Mission Youth Ministries Director.

d. Read the document entitled ‘Century of Adventism in the British Isles’ and answer the 64   questions that are on your USB.

Folder Evidence:

Guidance will be given on the Church Heritage Award in the training weekends. You will be required to submit all work required for the completion of the Church Heritage Award. You also need to submit book reports for the two books containing this information and using this format.

IN ADDITION you are required to read the document entitled ‘A Century of Adventism in the British Isles’ and complete the 64 questions that are on your USB.

9. Complete a two page (minimum) research paper about a standard temperament analysis program and complete the affiliated temperament inventory. (p.85)

Folder Evidence:

A 2 page research paper together with a copy of the chosen analysis program and the completed affiliated temperament inventory.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

1. Attend and complete a seminar in each of the following 12 subjects: (p.94-138)

a. Leadership

   1 - How to be a Christian Leader; 2 - Vision, mission and motivation; 3 - Risk Management for Adventurer & Pathfinder Ministries & 4 - Discipline

b. Communication

  5 - Communication Theory & listening; 6 - Practical communication practices & 7 - Understanding and teaching to learning styles

c. Creativity and resources

  8 - How to prepare effective creative worship & 9 - Understanding and using creativity

d. Child evangelism

  10 - Principles of youth and children’s evangelism; 11 - How to lead a child to Christ & 12 -  Understanding your spiritual gifts

Attendance at the sessions, any handouts that are given for the sessions & your notes from the sessions.

2. Have or earn the following honours: (p.147)

     a. Christian Storytelling, b. Camping Skills 1-4, c. Drilling & Marching & d. Knot tying

Folder Evidence:

Christian Storytelling (Guidance/training will be provided in one of the training weekends)

You must submit:

The completed storytelling worksheet, notes you take during the session & any handout(s) provided by the facilitator.

And for each story that you tell you must provide the following:

The outline using the format provided at the session; a copy of the story; the evaluation form completed and signed by your Pastor, an Elder or your Area Co-ordinator together with any notes that were produced.

 

Camping Skills 1 - 4 (Training will be provided throughout the training weekends)

You must submit:

Completed worksheets for each honour; any handouts provided by the facilitator; photo(s) of you completing the honours if possible. IF you already have the honour either provide the completed worksheet OR bring your sash to a support day and expect to be asked questions from the honour.

 

Drilling & Marching (Training will be provided throughout the training weekends)

You will be required to pass a written test and a practical test in the 4th training weekend. If you do not pass either test a reassessment date will be provided.

 

Knot Tying (One knot tying session is included in the training weekends)

You must:

Submit a completed worksheet together with a completed knot board and a pass practical assessment. IF you already have the honour either provide the completed worksheet OR bring your sash to a support day and expect to be tested on some of the requirements.

3. Earn two additional honours or awards of your choice not previously earned. (p.153)

Completed worksheets for each honour & handout(s) provided by the tutor.

4. Hold a current First Aid certificate that is applicable to children and adults. (p.155)

First Aid Certificate OR Completed Honour worksheet.

5. Supervise participants through either an Adventurer or Pathfinder Class level or teach a Children’s Sabbath School class for at least one year to a group of children ages 6-15. (p.157)

Letter from Club Director or Sabbath School Superintendent confirming your participation in this role and a copy of your teaching schedule for one quarter,

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

1. Read or listen to the book Education and submit a one page response focusing on the benefits of your reading. (p.161)

One A4 page typed submission using a font size 11 or 12.

2. Read or listen to either Child Guidance or Messages to Young People and submit a one page response focusing on the benefits of your reading. (p.163)

Folder Evidence:

One A4 page typed submission using a font size 11 or 12.

3. Attend three seminars dealing with child development or educational theory relating to the age of your primary ministry group. (p.167)

Folder Evidence:

Attendance at the three sessions that are included in the training weekends; any handouts that are given for the sessions & your notes from the sessions.

4. Observe for a period of two hours a group of Adventurers or Pathfinders and write a reflection on their interaction with each other and with the staff. (p.169)

Folder Evidence:

A copy of your typed (font size 11 or 12) reflections from your observations. This should be MINIMUM three quarters of an A4 page.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

1. Read a current book of your choice of topic under the general category of “Leadership Skill Development”. (p.173)

2. Demonstrate your leadership skills by doing the following: (p.175)

   a. Develop and conduct three creative worships

For each worship provide the following info:

Date of worship, Place of worship, Length of worship, Description of the group to whom you are presenting, Size of the group, Topic, Scriptural basis, Summary of format or style of presentation, Outline of your worship & copy of lesson plan.

   b. Participate in a leadership role with your local church children’s/youth group in a conference sponsored event

Folder Evidence:

Participation in Adventurer or Pathfinder Camporee and a completed Conference Sponsored Event Acknowledgement form.

   c. Teach three Adventurer Awards or two Pathfinder Honours

Folder Evidence:

For each award or honour provide the following info:

Name of the award or honour, Date taught, Place taught, Description of the group to whom you are teaching, Size of the group, Teaching plan, Self-evaluation observations regarding your teaching & any other relevant information or documents. Completed Award/Honour Acknowledgement form.

   d. Assist in planning and leading a field trip for a group of Adventurers, Pathfinders or Sabbath School class for children ages 6 to 15

Folder Evidence:

Name & location of the trip, Date of the trip, Description of the group, Copy of communication with the venue, Copy of communication with parents, Outline of activities, Copy of the risk assessment, Self-evaluation observations regarding the trip & completed Field Trip Acknowledgement form.

   e. Be an active Adventurer, Pathfinder or Sabbath School staff member for at least one year and attend at least 75% of all staff meetings.

Folder Evidence:

A letter from your Club Director to confirm your active participation & copies of the minutes from at least 3 staff meetings that indicate that you were present at the meetings.

3. Write goals that you would like to accomplish in your ministry. (p.177)

Completed Goals worksheet and Goal Action plan forms.

4. Identify three current roles in your life, at least one of which is spiritually oriented, and list three goals or objectives for each. (p.179)

FITNESS LIFESTYLE DEVELOPMENT

1. Participate in a personal physical fitness plan by completing one of the following: (p.183)

   a. The physical components of the AY Silver Award. If you already have the AY Silver  then move on to the AY Gold Award

   b. A school physical fitness program.

   c. A personal physical fitness program based on a fitness book of your choice or a workout program in consultation with your local leader supervising Master Guide/authorized instructor

Folder Evidence:

Evidence of completion of the AY Silver or Gold requirements OR a copy of the school physical fitness program OR evidence of the personal physical fitness program i.e. log of activities done and a summary of any improvements you observed.
